Support your local businesses!

As I mentioned in my earlier post today, we had a lot of DONATED support for our fundraising tea. For those of you who volunteer or work in the world of fundraising, you understand the importance of donations and donors. Donors are also people who not only donate products or services, but their own time to make sure an event is successful.

I would like to share our donors contact details here in my blog. These are amazing women and services within our community. People are always asking on facebook, “does anyone know who makes custom cakes, or cake pops, or gluten free baking” I have the answers to all of those questions here in this post.

Hadassah Tea and Fundraising event 2012

Last year I was asked by my friends to take over the fundraising chair postition of the Hadassah Chapter. They know that I enjoy volunteering, charity work, fundraising and event planning and thought it would be a good fit for me. I accepted the challenge and now was part of the exec.

I was in BBYO growing up and part of a chapter and it was a great learning tool as a teen to learn about how executives work, meet, plan, delegate and execute. As an adult, it is also more challenging, because you are now dealing with adults and every changing lives, families, situations. It certainly proves to be more challenging in adulthood.

So, our main fundraising event for the programming year was put into motion – a fundraising tea and purse auction. What is a purse auction you may ask? Well, it is easy actually – you ask everyone you know if they have gently used purses that they want to donate, and then you put together a silent auction to raise money (full post on executing to follow).

As fundraising chair I also asked everyone to ask people that they knew that were in the baking fields to donate baked goods and services to our tea. The contributions were OUTSTANDING and ABUNDANT. You cannot imagine the amazing aray of baked goods that were donated to our amazing tea. (Post to follow with all the names of the providers).

I am happy to report that our efforts netted out over $600 to CHW – Hadassah – Children Healthcare and Women – who have been helping in Canada and Israel for almost 100 years.

I know that this was the first and hopefully to become an annual event for our chapter.

Thank you to all of those who helped make the event a success!

Send me an angel

I was watching Whitney’s going home service on Saturday night and Alicia Keyes was called up to sing. She was overcome with her own emotions, but somehow found it in her to sing the most incredible song to honour her friend Whitney, or whom she called Mema.
I found myself part way through the song really emotional and crying. Not for what you may think, but because the words in the song were all about sending us an angel, and that of course to her, Whitney represented that angel.
The angel for me, was not Whitney, but another angel. An angel that I know who helped me three years ago today.
Last night at dinner, when I reminded my mom that it was three years ago today that I had my car accident. She didn’t remember. I am hoping that in time, I will forget as well. I am in the process of closing my claim with the insurance company, or maybe I would have let this anniversary start to become a distant memory for me.
But, not so much just yet. Maybe one more year I will remember to forget what today is.
But what I will never forget was the fact that I am pretty sure I am here today because of my angel, Aviva. I know that she was there with me that night, and that the two guys that helped me out of my car were there because of her. They had to be. One told me that he was a paramedic, which couldn’t really be, because there wasn’t an ambulance on the scene of the accident. Could it be a passerby who just “happened” to be an off duty paramedic? Possible. But what happened after I was pulled out of the car and taken to the tow truck, they were no where to be found. There was a police car, and the fire department arrived on scene, but no ambulance.
I think I will leave this memory with the fact that my angel made sure that it was not my time. I have seen and heard a lot of situations with brain injuries and so much worse that could have happened to me, but didn’t.
Thank you my angel, you will never be forgotten.
